What waterproofing is, physically
Waterproofing is a continuous membrane applied to the substrate before screed and tile, turned up the walls to a height that anticipates splash and standing water. Its continuity is the whole point: a membrane with a gap at a pipe penetration is not a membrane. TO FILL: waterproofing per wet area
Upturn height and pipe penetrations
The two places waterproofing fails are the wall upturn, where it is stopped too low, and the penetrations for floor traps and pipes, where sealing is fiddly and easy to rush.
The ponding test
A ponding test floods the waterproofed area and holds the water long enough to reveal a leak before tiling covers it. It is the only inspection that finds the problem while it is still cheap to fix, so it should appear on the programme as a named step.
What a warranty covers
A workmanship warranty covers the installation, not damage caused later by drilling into the membrane. CaseTrust-accredited renovation businesses must provide a workmanship warranty of 12 months from the completion date of the works (CASE).
