Kitchen Countertops: Quartz, Sintered Stone and Solid Surface
How each material behaves in a Singapore kitchen, and which failure mode belongs to which.
Quartz, sintered stone and solid surface are not interchangeable
Engineered quartz is a resin-bound stone: dense, non-porous and forgiving of daily use, but it discolours under sustained heat. Sintered stone is fired and handles heat far better, at a higher fabrication cost because it is harder to cut. Solid surface can be seamed invisibly and repaired by sanding, but it scratches more readily. TO FILL: countertop supply-and-install by material and run length
Fabrication is where the money goes
The slab is only part of the price. Cut-outs for the sink and hob, edge profiling, drainer grooves and the seam positions are fabrication work, and a long run with a corner costs more than its square footage suggests.
Seams and where to put them
Every countertop longer than a slab has a seam. Its position is a design decision — a seam over a cabinet gable is supported and inconspicuous, a seam over a dishwasher opening is neither.
What to check on delivery
Check the slab batch is consistent before installation, because veining and tone vary between batches, and a replacement piece ordered later rarely matches.
