Kitchen Countertops: Quartz, Sintered Stone and Solid Surface
How each material behaves in a Singapore kitchen, and which failure mode belongs to which.
Quartz, sintered stone and solid surface are not interchangeable
Engineered quartz is a resin-bound stone: dense, non-porous and forgiving of daily use, but it discolours under sustained heat. Sintered stone is fired and handles heat far better, at a higher fabrication cost because it is harder to cut. Solid surface can be seamed invisibly and repaired by sanding, but it scratches more readily.
Fabrication is where the money goes
The slab is only part of the price. Cut-outs for the sink and hob, edge profiling, drainer grooves and the seam positions are fabrication work, and a long run with a corner costs more than its square footage suggests.
Seams and where to put them
Every countertop longer than a slab has a seam. Its position is a design decision — a seam over a cabinet gable is supported and inconspicuous, a seam over a dishwasher opening is neither.
What to check on delivery
Check the slab batch is consistent before installation, because veining and tone vary between batches, and a replacement piece ordered later rarely matches.
