Kitchen Design and Renovation in a Singapore Flat
Layout against the existing services, worktop material, and the ventilation reality of local cooking.
Renovation or remodel — the same job
Kitchen renovation and kitchen remodelling describe the same work in Singapore; the second spelling is simply more common in American usage. What differs is scope, not vocabulary: a surface-level refresh, a cabinet replacement and a full strip-out are three different jobs that all get called a kitchen remodel.
Layout follows the existing services
The sink wants to stay near the existing waste stack and the hob near the gas point, because moving either buys you fall problems or a gas re-route. A galley, an L-shape and an island are not equally available in every flat — the services decide which are realistic.
Worktop material behaves differently under heat
Engineered quartz is dense and forgiving of daily use but discolours under sustained heat. Sintered stone handles heat far better at a higher fabrication cost. Solid surface can be seamed invisibly and sanded to repair, but scratches more readily. TO FILL: worktop supply-and-install by material and run length
Ventilation is a local problem
High-heat wok cooking loads an extractor far harder than the European kitchens most hoods are designed around. Duct length, the number of bends and the termination point matter more than the airflow figure on the box.
Wet-area boundaries
A kitchen that shares a wall with a bathroom or a service yard needs its waterproofing boundary drawn deliberately, because the failure shows up in the cabinet carcass long before it shows on the wall.
Working hours for kitchen strip-out
Removing existing wall tiles is noisy work, so it falls inside HDB's tighter window rather than the general one.
